BRAD DAWBER PHOTOGRAPHY

Brad began his photo career while still in high school in Orange County, Calif. His love of surfing inspired him to capture images along the Southern California coastline. In 1972 he dropped out of Golden West College in Huntington Beach to take on a full time job as “ad guy” and photographer for Surfing Magazine. This was a dream job for a young surfer and a great stepping stone. In 1974 a change was in the midst and Brad moved to Mammoth Lakes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. He wanted to be a ski bum for “one season”. Surrounded by all this beauty and recreation made it difficult to leave. He quickly took to ski photography and became a photographer for Powder Magazine. At the same time he was working the ultimate dream job as a heli-ski guide. This gave him the best conditions possible to photograph. In 1985 Brad opened Mammoth Gallery and created an ideal format for selling his landscape work. The gallery continues to this day and is the premier gallery of Eastern Sierra photography.

In 2002 Brad and his wife Pamela moved to the north shore of Kauai, one of the most beautiful places on earth! In 2003 they sold both of their galleries in Mammoth & also opened the Nani Kauai Gallery in Princeville. The natural beauty of Kauai gives Brad his inspiration to capture the dramatic landscapes. One of Brad’s greatest successes & joys is chartering helicopters for his aerial photography.

Prior to 2009, most of his work had been done with a Pentax 645N medium format camera & Fuji Velvia film. The images are scanned with a Nikon 9000 film scanner to a 160 mb file. Great attention is taken to match the print to the original transparency. With the phenomenal advancements in the sensors in the Nikon D300 digital SLR, Brad realized that the dynamic range of a scene can be captured with greater accuracy than could be captured on film. The ultimate goal is to remain a purist and bring out the real colors that are seen with the naked eye, not by artificial enhancements. He prints everything himself on an Epson 9880 wide format printer utilizing 100 year archival Ultrachrome inks. Brad is truly blessed to have made his career in a profession that brings so much joy to his clients and to himself.
